What is Copyright
- Copyright is an intellectual property right that grants creators exclusive control over their original works—literary, artistic, musical, or digital—for a limited period. Its goal is to promote creativity and innovation while balancing public access to knowledge. Related (neighboring) rights protect performers, producers, and broadcasters for their contributions to bringing creative works to the public.
Registration of Works
- The Ethiopian Intellectual Property Authority (EIPA) registers works under Regulation No. 305/2014. Registration is optional but provides legal proof of ownership. The certificate issued is valid for five years and serves as prima facie evidence before the law.
Benefits of Copyright Registration
- Legal evidence of ownership
- Easier enforcement and deterrence against infringement
- Economic benefits (licensing, royalties)
- Moral recognition and professional credibility
- Public record of ownership
- Support for international protection (Berne Convention)
- Simplifies transfer, licensing, and inheritance of rights
Duration of Protection
- Life of author + 50 years (literary, artistic, musical works)
- 50 years from publication (audiovisual and sound recordings)
- 50 years from first broadcast
