Copyright and related rights royalty procedure presented to media stakeholders

A consultation meeting regarding the royalty procedure for copyright and related rights was held today, June 17, 2025, in Addis Ababa with leaders and representatives from various media outlets.
Ato Woldu Yimesel, Director General of the Authority, explained that the royalty system for copyright and related rights not only enables stakeholders in the creative arts industry and rights holders to benefit from their works but also contributes to fulfilling social responsibilities. He emphasized that the system encourages innovation and significantly contributes to the development of the arts sector.
Ato Wosen Mulu, Lead Executive for Copyright and Related Rights, clarified that the royalty system involves a collective management associations that collects payments based on a formula and distributes them to rights holders. He stressed that since media outlets are among the payers and collectors, collaboration is essential.
Leaders of the collective management associations’ joint committee, along with musicians Teodros Mosissa, Haile Roots, and Henok Mehari, explained the prepared procedure, noting that it was developed through studies and consideration of various factors.
